Couples Therapy Explained
Couples therapy can feel quite different to individual therapy so even if you have experienced therapy, a couple session might feel unfamiliar.
I am currently training in a style of therapy specifically designed for couples work called Imago Therapy. Unlike a traditional couples session, an Imago session requires you to talk not to me but to your partner. My role is to facilitate and deepen this conversation. And to help your partner really listen to what you’re saying.
People often are surprised by how much they learn about a person they thought they knew so well. This can really deepen the connection between you both. And Imago offers you both a skill which you can take out of the therapy room and into your relationship beyond our sessions.
The initial couples session lasts just one hour. Subsequent sessions last two hours, giving you ample time to really get to the bottom what’s going on for you both. Some prior preparation is needed for these sessions which will be explained during our initial session.
As part of my Imago training, I ask if you would consent to my videoing the session so that I can bring it to supervision. This is purely for my learning. The footage is deleted following this. Of course, if you prefer that I don’t video, this is totally ok. It won’t affect the session in any way negatively if you choose to decline to have it videotaped.
If Imago therapy isn’t for you, I am happy to work in a more traditional way with you. I have experience of working in a less structured, non Imago way and I would be happy to do that if you feel it works better for you both.
